When we read an article claiming a pre-colonial culture (Fanon), do we read that as an expression of identity, and as representative of an identity? or do we treat it as a speech act, an attempt to refashion identity? As far as intentions ate concerned, it is probably both. As for effectiveness, any claim to refashion must draw on what is accepted, while reorganizing them in ways that may appear novel, but ate essentially just telling people what they already know.
