Rigid materialists, when confronted with the power of ideas, attempt to ignore it, to sieve through the “rhetoric.” Rigid rational choice theorists tend to fight it. Constructivists try to embrace it. The thing is that all these schools of thoughts can provide useful analytical insights, so long as we don’t take them to be the only rigid truth.

The same three responses can be used to think about how people respond to emotions: ignore it, fight it, embrace it.
